I just found out that there's a Serenity RPG, and I was wondering whether anybody around here plays it or is interested in starting a group. I've never done a pen-and-paper RPG before, but I think this sounds like a fun way to start.
Simply because someone has elements that are familiar to characters from the show, does not mean they are unoriginal. I deliberately chose certain aspects of Alex that would link him to Wash because I was trying to pay homage, in a sense. Yes, we want to set up our own characters that are distinct from the crew of Serenity. But that doesn't mean we should sacrifice out ideals just so we don't risk having someone point out "YOUR CHARACTER HAS A LETTER IN THE NAME SIMILAR TO THIS CHARACTER IN THIS EPISODE AND YOU ARE JUST COPYING OFF OF JOSS WHEDON AND YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!" ;P
Not to mention "bubbly pilot" is nowhere near what Wash was; in fact, he's closer to Kaylee or even River when she's not freaking out or acting creepy in a sense. To divulge some information, the character of Alexander is extremely immature and near-childlike in his actions: He likes to climb on stuff and play around, it's really hard to make him sad, and overall he's just a little kid when it comes to having fun. He had to grow up way too quick as a teenager due to events that happened, so now he's making up for lost time. Believe me, while he may be similar in the "pilot who makes funny jokes" sense, there's WAY WAY WAY much more in terms of difference. ;)
Name: Derek
Willing to GM? Not at this time
Availability: weds and thursday nights right now, but my weekends might free up in july as I may be starting a new job
Preferred position: Cook
Secondary position: Thug or I can modify character depending on the needs of the crew.
Supplies: Serenity book, dice, usual gaming stuff
My cook character served with the Independents in one of their more notorious outfits and has been making his way from ship to ship as a cook. Generally a happy guy who takes the safety and welfare of his crewmates as his highest priority. I've got a couple of short stories of him that I wrote for my last two times playing Serenity, but I'll try to keep him toned down to work within the crew.
With about 12 hours to CTST, I'm gonna let y'all know that I'll be out at the place bright and early (No less than 1 hour prior to start, possibly more), and I'll be out there with the book and some extra materials in case anyone wants to chat about it prior to heading in to watch. I'll be wearing a Blue Sun shirt and I'll have an Element backpack shipped to me via TG Freight (bonus points if you get the reference ;) ). I'll respond to Joshua, Josh, JD, just not Joshie.
I presume most of us will be meeting up during the after-movie chilldown, so either way, at least 3/4 of the consistent group can set up to chit-chat and discuss characters.
